1937 Gray's Pottery Floral Ashtray/Trinket Dish
This RARE and very pretty ashtray, with its colourful hand-painted florals and gilt edge, harks back a world of 'old school' glamour and charm.
While smoking today, may not be quite so 'en-vouge', this pretty little piece would make an excellent trinket or pin dish, or perhaps used to store jewellery on a dressing table.
It is adorned with cheerful, glossy cyan-blue, salmon-pink and plum flowers, over a warm-cream ground, completed by a matt gold edging.
Key Points:
• An RARE and highly collectible 1930's ashtray/dish
• Pretty decorative hand-painted details
• Matt glaze with gloss effect detailing and matt gilt
• Produced by AE Gray Limited, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent
• Maker's mark to base
• Exterior excellent condition, interior good, as detailed below
History:
Gray’s Pottery, now highly collectible, was founded by Albert Edward Gray in Stoke-on-Trent, in 1907. Hand-decorated patterns were the very essence of their work, with the famous ceramist/designer Susie Cooper working at the company.
Year of manufacture:
c. 1937
This scarcely found example has been fully researched using the Gray's Pottery website, where it can be found dating to circa 1937.
Pattern:
A4179
Approximate Measurements:
11cm diameter at rim / 3 cm at tallest point
Condition:
In good condition though, showing signs of wear to its interior as detailed below. It exterior is in excellent condition and displays well, free of surface scuffs, marks or any notable wear to its painted details or gilt.
It interior does have a couple of very stable, dark, hairlines running through its centre and in a semi-circle underneath its lip, and though clearly present, we feel ultimately they don't detract from the aesthetics of the piece and are not visible on its exterior face. However, this is reflective in its gentle pricing, but we strongly feel that a piece as rare and useable as this, simply doesn't warrant being discarded as 'damaged'.

Buyers Guide:
It is very important to note, that all the pieces Roof + Roof sell are genuine pieces of age, each having a rich and varied past and are never sold as in new condition. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. We always try, to the best of our ability to honestly and clearly communicate an items condition, both in our description and photography, highlighting anything over and above what we perceive as ‘general age related wear and tear’.
We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, as these naturally form part of the item's description. Please be aware that your monitor, tablet, or mobile device may emulate colours/tones differently 'on screen' to that of the actual physical item, all of which are photographed and shown to the best of our abilities. Any item/prop shown in our photography is used for styling purposes only. Prior to purchasing, if you would like further clarification on any item, then we are always happy to help in any way possible.
