Antique Indonesian Copper Batik 'Tjap' Stamps
The Story
These intricate copper blocks, known as Tjaps (pronounced "chops"), originate from Indonesia and were traditionally used in the Batik printing process to apply hot wax to fabric. Dating to the early 20th century (c. 1900–1920), they are remarkable examples of artisan craftsmanship. Each block is handmade from narrow strips of heat-conductive copper and copper wire, shaped into complex geometric or organic patterns.
