Antique English Flow Blue ‘Pandora’ Serving Plate
The Story
This incredibly pretty serving plate features the "Pandora" pattern, a scarce design by Soho Pottery of Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent. Dating to approximately 1908, it is a classic example of "Flow Blue" pottery, where the cobalt oxide glaze "flows" or blurs slightly during firing to create a soft, romantic finish. The pattern depicts idyllic lakeside vistas framed by a decorative combed feather pattern rim, capturing the early 20th-century fascination with scenic and romantic landscapes.
The Details
Dimensions: 25cm W x 20cm D.
Maker: Soho Pottery, Cobridge (fully marked to base).
Pattern: Pandora.
Era: c. 1908+.
Origin: England.
Condition: Very good antique condition. The colors and glaze remain surprisingly bright and fresh. As expected for a piece of this age, there is common surface crazing and some discoloration to the edges. There is a very tiny impact mark on the front resulting in a small, stable hairline (visible in listing photos), which is resolute and non-problematic.
Why It’s Special
Flow Blue pieces from the Edwardian era are highly sought after for their deep, moody indigo tones and "misty" appearance. Soho Pottery was only established in 1904, making their early patterns like "Pandora" relatively rare compared to larger Staffordshire giants. The combination of the scenic transfer and the textured "feather" rim gives it a wonderful tactile and visual depth.
Styling Tips
Dresser Display: This is the quintessential "dresser plate." Lean it against the back of a wooden hutch or shelf alongside other blue-and-white ironstone. The deep blues look particularly striking against light oak or painted white wood.
Wall Decor: Because of its oval shape and romantic scenery, it makes for beautiful wall art. Use a plate hanger to incorporate it into a gallery wall of mixed vintage mirrors and prints.
Farmhouse Entertaining: While a beautiful collector's item, it can still be used to serve dry snacks like crackers or bread at a country-style table, adding a layer of history to your hosting.
