Antique Arthur Woods Blue & White Willow Pattern Teapot Stand
The Story
This stunning teapot stand is an exceptionally fine and early example of the classic Willow pattern by Arthur Woods. Produced in Longport, Stoke-on-Trent, this piece features an unusually dark cobalt blue—reminiscent of "Flow Blue"—and is elegantly finished with gilt (gold) edging around the central roundel and rim. A true country cottage staple, it captures the romantic Chinoiserie aesthetic that has been a favorite in British homes for over two centuries.
The Details
Era: Circa 1904 – 1928.
Maker: Arthur Woods, Longport, England.
Markings: Marked "AW L Willow" to the base.
Dimensions: 16.5cm (6.5") Diameter / 2cm High.
Material: English earthenware with transfer-printed pattern and gilt accents.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. It shows light signs of surface wear from use, some age-related crazing, and patchy loss to the gilt edging, all of which are typical for a piece of this age and add to its authentic character.
Why It’s Special
The Willow pattern is famous for telling a story through its imagery (the two birds, the bridge, the willow tree). This particular stand is a scarcer find due to its gilt detailing and the depth of its cobalt blue print, which is much richer than standard mass-produced versions. It is a functional piece designed to protect polished surfaces from the heat of a teapot, but it is equally beautiful as a standalone collector's item.
Styling Tips
The Traditional Tea Tray: Use it exactly as intended—to cradle a warm teapot on a tray during afternoon tea. It adds an instant layer of Victorian charm to your table setting.
Dresser Vignette: Lean it against the back of a shelf on a kitchen dresser. Its circular form and bold blue tones make it a perfect "anchor" piece for a collection of blue and white china.
Wall Art: Because of its decorative gilt rim and compact size, it can be mounted on a wall as part of a grouped ceramic display.
