Early Victorian Minton Celadon Green Relief Moulded Jug
The Story
A truly scarce find from the mid-19th century, this ewer jug by Minton of Stoke-on-Trent is a masterclass in early Victorian ceramic design. It features an intricate "climbing ivy" motif in relief, paired with a soft, glossy Celadon green glaze. While this design (Model 259) is more commonly found in white Parian ware, this glazed version is exceptionally rare, offering a timeless, organic aesthetic that feels remarkably modern for a piece nearly 180 years old.
The Details
Dimensions: 16.5cm (6.5") H at spout x 11.5cm W (including handle).
Maker: Minton, Stoke-on-Trent (marked with a registration diamond and model 259).
Era: Circa 1845.
Material: Relief-moulded earthenware with a Celadon green gloss glaze.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The glaze is fresh and craze-free. There are three small, well-hidden "nibbles" to the foot rim and a tiny manufacturing imperfection on the spout rim. The handle shows two small firing lines/flaws from its original manufacture.
Why It’s Special
Minton was one of the most prestigious Staffordshire potteries, frequently exhibiting at the Great Exhibition of 1851. This jug showcases the Victorian fascination with the natural world; the relief-moulded ivy wraps around the body with lifelike detail. The choice of a Celadon glaze—inspired by ancient Chinese ceramics—adds a layer of understated luxury that makes this piece a significant collector's item.
Styling Tips
Botanical Centerpiece: Its "climbing ivy" design makes it the perfect vessel for fresh garden flowers. Style it with white hydrangeas or simple seasonal blooms to let the green relief-work pop.
Breakfast Sophistication: Use it as a water or juice pitcher at the table. Its elegant, flared spout and ornate handle make it a tactile and beautiful functional object for everyday rituals.
Antique Vignette: Pair it with other relief-moulded ceramics or classic white wares on a dark wood sideboard. The contrast between the soft green glaze and the white stoneware of other pieces will highlight the intricate moulding.
