Silver Plated Fruit / Bread Basket by John Round & Son
The Story
This magnificent antique silver-plated basket is a testament to Victorian Sheffield craftsmanship. Created by the acclaimed silversmiths John Round & Son, it dates between 1847 and 1874. The basket features a classic ribbed body, a scalloped and etched rim, and a delicate rope-twist swing handle. Over the decades, it has developed a stunning, iridescent "gun-metal grey" patina that highlights its intricate details and gives it a sophisticated, weathered look.
The Details
Dimensions: 30.5cm (12") W x 23.5cm D x 23cm H (including handle).
Maker: John Round & Son, Sheffield (marked with the "All the Round" trademark).
Era: Victorian (c. 1847–1874).
Material: EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver).
Condition: Excellent antique condition. It retains a heavy, genuine aged patina with oxidized surfaces and some historic polish residue - features that we intentionally leave, so in "as sourced" condition to preserve its history.
Why It’s Special
John Round began his workshop attached to his house in Tudor Street, Sheffield, and grew it into one of the most respected silver plate firms of the era. This specific basket is a "standout" piece because of its scale and the high quality of the etching and silverwork. The rope-twist handle is a particularly fine detail that adds a nautical or classic European flair to the design.
Styling Tips
Table Centerpiece: Use it as a fruit bowl on a large dining table. The dark, gun-metal patina provides a dramatic contrast against the vibrant colors of citrus, apples, or pomegranates.
Elevated Entertaining: Drape a linen napkin inside and use it to serve warm bread or rolls. Its Victorian elegance instantly upgrades a Sunday brunch or dinner party.
Mantel Statement: Even when empty, this basket is a sculptural object. Style it on a mantle or sideboard alongside antique glassware or a stack of leather-bound books.
Shipping & Sustainability
100% plastic-free, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging.
U.K. Delivery: Sent via FREE Royal Mail Tracked 48 service.
