Victorian Etched Silver Plated Tea & Coffee Set by Charles Henry Hattersley
The Story
This heavyweight, three-piece tea and coffee set is a masterwork of late Victorian craftsmanship. Produced by Charles Henry Hattersley of Sheffield between 1890 and 1900, it reflects the English Renaissance style popular at the turn of the century. Hattersley was a respected Sheffield silversmith (and, interestingly, an accomplished bell ringer at Sheffield Cathedral for over 50 years). This set is made from Britannia Metal (EPBM) - a high-quality pewter alloy favored for its smooth, silvery finish.
The Details
Set Includes: Large tea/coffee pot, twin-handled sugar basin, and matching creamer jug.
Design: Oval shape with wide scalloped ribbing, bone finial, and insulated handle on the pot.
Etching: Delicate floral, foliage, and lozenge motifs, with a small cursive letter ‘R’ engraved on one face of each piece.
Dimensions:
Pot: 21cm H x 26cm W.
Sugar Basin: 10cm H x 26cm W.
Creamer: 9cm H x 13.5cm W.
Hallmarks: Marked "CHH" and "BMEP" on the bases.
Condition: Very good antique condition. It features a "most honest patina" where the silver plate has worn gracefully over time, allowing the darker base metal to peek through. The creamer jug has a small amount of wear to its spout, on its inner lip. No other large dents or "dinks" are present.
Why It’s Special
The weight and intricate etching of this set give it a presence that modern reproductions cannot match. The "lived-in" patina tells the story of over a century of polishing and use, making it feel like a genuine heirloom. Because the interiors are oxidized due to age, this set is recommended for decorative use only, making it a perfect sculptural element for the home.
Styling Tips
Dresser Centerpiece: This set is the ultimate addition to a vintage Welsh dresser or side cabinet. The scalloped ribbing catches shadows and light, creating a beautiful silhouette against dark wood.
Seasonal Vase: Use the coffee pot or creamer as a vessel for seasonal flowers. A bunch of wild foliage or bright tulips emerging from the silver pot creates a stunning "Modern Rustic" look on a windowsill or dining table.
