EXTREMELY RARE George Jones & Sons Large Serving Plate
The Story
An exceptional piece of British ceramic history, this large and heavy ironstone serving platter is an early production from George Jones & Sons (Crescent Pottery) in Stoke-on-Trent. Dating from 1861–1873, it is a quintessential example of the Aesthetic Movement. The "NEBO" pattern is incredibly rare; extensive research suggests that very few pieces in this design still exist. The platter features a striking black transfer-printed design on a soft cream ground, depicting fashionable motifs of the era: pomegranates, blossoms, insects, birds, and an oriental-style fan at the centre.
The Details
Dimensions: 38.5cm Wide / 31cm Deep.
Maker: George Jones & Sons (Crescent Pottery).
Pattern: NEBO.
Era: Circa 1861–1873.
Materials: Heavyweight ironstone with black transfer print.
Marks: Base features the G.J. & Sons mark, the impressed crescent-shape stamp, and the pattern name.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. It is remarkably free of surface crazing or damage. It shows very light surface/utensil marks from use and minor firing blemishes from manufacture, which are typical for pottery of this age.
Why It’s Special
The Aesthetic Movement (c. 1870–1900) was defined by "Art for Art’s sake," and this platter perfectly captures that ethos with its intricate, nature-inspired asymmetry. Its rarity cannot be overstated - finding a piece of this scale in such excellent condition from the early years of George Jones & Sons is a true collector's discovery. It is as much a piece of art as it is a functional serving dish.
Styling Tips
Dressers & Shelves: Its large size and bold black-on-cream pattern make it a perfect "anchor" piece for a kitchen dresser or a plate rack.
Wall Decoration: Use a secure plate hanger to display this on a dining room wall. The graphic nature of the Aesthetic Movement imagery acts like a framed print.
Farmhouse Feast: Despite its rarity, it is robust ironstone. Use it to serve a Sunday roast or a large spread of seasonal vegetables to bring historical soul to a modern table.
