Bitter Chocolate-Brown Sgraffito Bud Vase by Jane Mullarkey
The Story
This immaculate stoneware bud vase is a hand-thrown work by English potter Jane Mullarkey, produced at Dersingham Pottery in Norfolk. The pottery was established in 1972 by Jane Mullarkey (and husband Ben) in converted stables that once belonged to the Sandringham Estate. Dating from the 1970s, this piece features a tactile semi-matt glaze in a rich "bitter chocolate" brown, accented by a simple sgraffito design around the neck that reveals the cream body beneath.
The Details
Dimensions: 10cm High / 8cm at its widest point.
Maker: Jane Mullarkey, Dersingham Pottery, Norfolk.
Era: Circa 1970s.
Materials: Hand-thrown stoneware with an unglazed base.
Palette: Bitter chocolate brown and cream.
Condition: Immaculate vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. It remarkably retains its original pottery label on the base, alongside the impressed 'JM' maker's mark.
Why It’s Special
Sgraffito is a ceramic technique where the potter scratches through a surface layer of slip or glaze to reveal the contrasting colour of the clay body underneath. This vase is a beautiful example of how simple, geometric patterns can transform a functional object into a piece of mid-century art. Its small scale and neutral, earthy tones make it incredibly versatile—it feels just as relevant in a contemporary minimalist home as it does in a rustic farmhouse.
Styling Tips
Solo Statement: Its strong color and graphic neck detail allow it to stand alone on a small shelf or mantelpiece as a sculptural object.
Autumnal Bud Vase: Use it to hold a single dried flower head, a sprig of pampas grass, or a small autumnal branch to complement the rich chocolate tones.
Natural Grouping: Pair it with other stoneware pieces in varying heights—particularly those in cream or sand tones—to create a curated, grounded vignette on a coffee table or sideboard.
