Marzi & Remy Modernist Sulphur Yellow and Gold Stripe Vase

£35.00

The Story

A striking example of West German Mid-Century design, this vase was produced by the highly collectible firm Marzi & Remy in the 1950s. Founded in 1879 in Höhr, the Westerwald, the company was a titan of German stoneware production for over a century. This particular piece features a squat, curved form glazed in an unusual sulphur yellow satin-matt glaze, accented by thin, hand-painted matt gold vertical stripes and a gloss black rim. It is stamped with model number 1003/14 and marked "foreign," indicating it was originally destined for export.

The Details

  • Dimensions: 15cm High / 7.5cm Diameter at rim.

  • Maker: Marzi & Remy, Höhr, West Germany.

  • Era: Circa 1950s.

  • Aesthetic: Modernist / Mid-Century Retro.

  • Condition: Very good vintage condition. There are no chips, nibbles, or previous repairs. As expected with a piece of this age, there are minor surface marks and a few spots of rust deep inside from historical use. There is a small, faint firing line extending approximately one inch from the rim, though it is well-disguised by the gold stripe pattern.

Why It’s Special

While "Fat Lava" West German pottery is well-known, this earlier 1950s piece represents a more elegant, refined era of European modernism. The combination of the sulphur yellow and the gloss black interior is quintessentially retro. The hand-painted gold stripes add a layer of human craftsmanship to the industrial form, making it a sophisticated choice for collectors of post-war ceramics.

Styling Tips

  • Mid-Century Sideboard: Place it on a teak sideboard alongside a low-slung lamp. The sulphur yellow provides a perfect pop of colour against the warm wood tones of 1950s and 60s furniture.

  • Dried Flower Vase: Its wide-bellied shape makes it ideal for a small bunch of dried billy buttons (Craspedia) or a single architectural branch.

Sustainable Shipping

  • 100% plastic-free, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging.

  • U.K. Delivery: Sent via FREE Royal Mail Tracked 48 service.
