1950s Mint Green SylvaC Floral Posy Basket
The Story
This charming Mid-Century posy vase by SylvaC is a classic of 1950s English pottery. Designed in a sweet basket shape, it features bold floral details in relief and is finished in a glossy "icy-mint" green glaze - a color that perfectly captures the aesthetic of the era. Produced by Shaw and Copestake Ltd in Stoke-on-Trent, these baskets were a staple of the mid-century home, designed to hold small, seasonal flower arrangements.
The Details
Dimensions: 15cm H (to the top of the handle) x 12cm W (at the rim).
Maker: Shaw and Copestake Ltd (SylvaC), Stoke-on-Trent.
Model Number: 1780 (impressed on the base).
Era: Circa 1950s.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. There are a few tiny, insignificant kiln "frit" marks on the interior from manufacture, which are not visible when in use. (Two identical vases are available).
Why It’s Special
SylvaC is one of the most collectible names in 20th-century British ceramics. While they are often known for their animal figures (like the famous SylvaC rabbits), their floral-relief kitchenware and vases are highly prized for their architectural forms and distinct glazes. The "Model 1780" basket is particularly lovely because of its detailed wicker-effect texture and the way the glossy mint glaze pools in the crevices of the relief flowers.
Styling Tips
Springtime Posy: True to its original purpose, this vase looks beautiful filled with short-stemmed seasonal blooms like snowdrops, primroses, or sweet peas. The cool mint green provides a soft, pastel backdrop for colorful petals.
Creative Desk Tidy: For a non-traditional use, it makes a "jaunty" and unique pencil pot or makeup brush holder. The handle makes it easy to move around your workspace, and the mint color adds a fresh, vintage feel to a desk.
The Mantel Vignette: Style it alongside other SylvaC pieces or 1950s glassware in complementary pastel shades (like pale pink or lemon yellow) to create a soft, nostalgic display on a mantelpiece or window sill.
