Large Floral Water Jug / Flower Vase | HJ Woods
The Story
This elegant, slim flared jug—which doubles beautifully as a flower vase—is a classic example of mid-century chic. Dating to the 1950s, it features hand-painted cottage garden flowers and sprigs in "summery tones." The design is further elevated by a distinctive relief-moulded brick pattern, a curved "branch-like" handle, and an oversized spout.
The Details
Dimensions: ~33cm H x 11.5cm W (at base).
Shape Number: 373 (a scarcely found shape).
Maker: HJ Woods, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent (clearly marked to base).
Era: Circa 1950s.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. It has a few minor areas of patchy loss to the paintwork and some slight discolouration to the interior base from use (neither of which are visible when on display).
Why It’s Special
The combination of the tactile brick-effect texture and the delicate hand-painted floral motifs makes this a standout piece of post-war English pottery. Its height and sculptural form make it an ideal centerpiece for a dining table or a console.
