RARE Schott & Gen Modernist Copper, Brass and Glass Coffee Set

£95.00

The Story

This 13-piece German coffee set is a masterclass in Mid-Century Modern (MCM) industrial design. Produced in the 1950s by the renowned Schott & Gen (the precursor to the modern-day Schott AG), it features "JENAer" glass—a specialized borosilicate glass developed by Otto Schott in 1887. Like modern-day Pyrex, this ultra-thin glass is heat-resistant, allowing you to pour boiling water directly into it without the risk of shattering. The set is a rare find, combining the scientific precision of German glassware with the warmth of decorative metalwork.

The Details

  • Quantity: 13 pieces in total (6 glass cups, 6 metal holders, 1 serving tray).

  • Maker: Schott & Gen, Mainz, Germany.

  • Era: Circa 1950s.

  • Materials: Ultra-thin JENAer heat-resistant glass, spun copper cup holders with angular brass handles, and a hammered brass serving tray.

  • Dimensions:

    • Cups: 6cm High / 8.5cm Diameter.

    • Holders: 4cm High / 7cm Diameter (9cm wide including handle).

    • Tray: 30cm Long / 21cm Wide.

  • Condition: Very good vintage condition. The glass is immaculate with no chips or cracks. The copper and brass show minor surface wear and light tarnish consistent with age (one cup holder has slightly more tarnish than the others), and the tray has gentle surface scratches from use, all of which add to its authentic vintage character.

Why It’s Special

The mix of metals—warm copper and gold-toned brass—was a signature of 1950s "New Look" interiors. Finding a complete set of six with the original serving tray is incredibly rare. The design is so streamlined and architectural that it feels just as relevant in a contemporary minimalist kitchen today as it did seventy years ago.

Styling Tips

  • The Ritual of Coffee: Use it for serving strong, dark espresso or a "Café au Lait."

  • Home Bar Accent: Even when not in use for coffee, the hammered brass tray and copper holders make a stunning display on a mid-century bar cart alongside vintage spirits and glassware.

Sustainable Shipping

  • 100% plastic-free, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging.

  • U.K. Delivery: Sent via FREE Royal Mail Tracked 48 service.
