Pair of Immaculate 1930's Alfred Meakin ‘Old Willow’ Side Plates

£20.00

The Story

These exceptionally fine side (or bread and butter) plates are quintessential country classics. Produced by Alfred Meakin in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, during the 1930s, they feature the world-renowned 'Old Willow' pattern. This Chinoiserie design was inspired by hand-painted wares imported from China and is famous for the romantic folk tale it depicts - immortalized in the popular "Two birds flying high" poem. What sets these particular plates apart is the unusually crisp transfer printing in a deep, rich cobalt blue.

The Details

  • Quantity: Sold as a pair.

  • Dimensions: 17cm (6.5") Diameter.

  • Maker: Alfred Meakin, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, England.

  • Pattern: Old Willow.

  • Condition: Immaculate vintage condition. They have clearly been cherished, showing only the lightest signs of use (one plate has a couple of faint utensil marks, the other has none).

Why They’re Special

The Willow pattern is arguably the most collected ceramic design in history, but the quality of the transfer can vary wildly. These 1930s Alfred Meakin examples are noted for their clarity and the intensity of the cobalt pigment. Because they are in such pristine condition, they are as suitable for a daily breakfast table as they are for a high-end display.

Styling Tips

  • The Mixed Collection: Blue and white china is incredibly forgiving; these plates will look wonderful mixed with other patterns like 'Blue Danube' or 'Spode Italian' for a curated, eclectic table setting.

  • Dresser Display: Their 17cm size makes them perfect for the middle or top shelf of a kitchen dresser. Stand them upright to show off the intricate bridge and pagoda details.

  • Modern Minimalist Contrast: In a modern kitchen with a neutral palette, a pair of cobalt blue Willow plates provides a sharp, sophisticated pop of colour and a touch of heritage.
