Unique Antique Imari ‘Burmah’ Pattern Plate
The Story
Sourced from the heart of the Staffordshire Potteries, this antique cake/side plate is a fascinating mystery. It features the 'Burmah' pattern by the Royal Albion China Co. of Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, dating to the 1920s. What makes this piece truly unique is that it appears to have been left unfinished. While the delicate Chinoiserie design of flowers and a large jardinière has been transfer-printed and partially over-painted in blue and green, it lacks the rust-red and yellow tones typical of the completed pattern. It was likely a test piece for pattern or firing, or perhaps a practice piece for a pottery decorator.
The Details
Dimensions: 17cm Diameter.
Maker: Royal Albion China Co. (Royal Albion Pottery), Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.
Pattern: Burmah (Unfinished/Test piece).
Era: Circa 1920s.
Design: Hand-painted Chinoiserie floral design in a limited palette of blue and green over a transfer print.
Condition: Good antique condition. It shows some utensil marks from use (visible when held to the light), but is free of chips, nibbles, crazing, or paint fade.
Why It’s Special
Collectors of Staffordshire pottery often look for "errors" or "seconds" because they offer a rare glimpse into the manufacturing process of the early 20th century. The unfinished nature of this plate gives it a softer, more ethereal aesthetic than the standard high-contrast Imari wares of the period. It is a one-of-a-kind "process piece" that tells a story of the factory floor.
Styling Tips
The Curated Gallery Wall: Because of its unique, muted colour palette, this plate is an excellent choice for a wall display. It pairs beautifully with more vibrant Imari pieces, providing a visual "rest" for the eye.
Minimalist Tea Set: Use it as a side plate for a minimalist afternoon tea. The blue and green tones look particularly fresh against a crisp white linen tablecloth.
Jewellery Dish: Its 17cm size makes it a perfect catch-all for a dressing table, where its unique history can be appreciated up close every day.
