Very EARLY Minton Amherst Japan Plate
Very EARLY Minton Amherst Japan Plate
The Story
This is a "most honest" and characterful example of early 19th-century English Ironstone from the esteemed Minton factory. Dating from approximately 1830 or slightly later, it features the celebrated "Amherst Japan" pattern - a striking Chinoiserie design in rich cobalt blue and brick red with delicate yellow accents. This hand-painted pattern was Minton's response to the craze for "Imari" style ceramics, blending Japanese aesthetic influences with English ceramic durability.
The Details
Dimensions: 17.5cm (7") Diameter.
Maker: Minton, Stoke-on-Trent, England.
Pattern: Amherst Japan.
Era: Circa 1830+.
Materials: High-quality English Ironstone china.
Marks: Base features a printed scroll mark, a diamond, and two impressed marks.
Condition: Characterful vintage condition. This piece shows its long history with visible utensil marks and some loss of color to the hand-painted pattern. There are minor spots of discoloration on the reverse, but notably, it is free from chips, cracks, or crazing. It is priced to reflect this honest, weathered patina.
Why It’s Special
The Minton factory, founded in 1796, was the premier manufacturer of Victorian "art" porcelains. The "Amherst Japan" pattern is particularly collectible for its bold, "Flow Blue" style contrasts. A piece this old (nearly 200 years) that remains intact is a testament to the strength of "Ironstone," which was originally marketed as a more durable alternative to fragile porcelain.
Styling Tips
Eclectic Dresser Display: Its deep blues and reds look stunning when leaned against simpler creamware or white ironstone on a kitchen dresser or open shelving.
Mixed Table Setting: Use it as a side plate for bread or cake to add an instant sense of history to a modern table setting. It pairs beautifully with solid-colored linens in navy or terracotta.
Wall Gallery: Because of its intricate pattern, it makes a wonderful candidate for a wall display. Group it with other Chinoiserie or Imari-style plates to create a high-impact focal point in a dining room.
