Rare Hermann Schlegel Hand-Coloured Turaco Lithograph

£95.00

The Story

This exceptional antique lithograph, dating from 1860, was created by the renowned German ornithologist Hermann Schlegel. It depicts an African Turaco (Musophaga Leucocastra) and was originally part of a prestigious, unbound portfolio titled The Turacos, based on Schlegel's studies at the Amsterdam Zoo. Commissioned by the Dutch Royal Zoological Society and dedicated to King Willem III, this series is widely regarded as one of the greatest bird studies ever published.

The Details

  • Dimensions: ~31cm H x 28.5cm W (Overall framed size).

  • Maker: Hermann Schlegel (Ornithologist).

  • Era: Circa 1860.

  • Format: Hand-coloured lithograph, framed (unglazed).

  • Condition: Good antique condition. It features historic brown "foxing" (speckling) and minor tonal discolouration consistent with its 160+ year age. The frame and backing are solid. The print appears to have been trimmed for framing, but this does not detract from its aesthetic value.

Why It’s Special

We believe that this publication was never available for public sale; but produced in very limited numbers and presented exclusively to society members and zoological scientists. Owning a piece from this portfolio is a rare opportunity for collectors of natural history and fine antique art. The hand-coloured detailing brings a vibrant, life-like quality to the Turaco’s plumage that modern prints cannot replicate.

Styling Tips

  • Heritage Wall: Hang this as a central piece in a "gallery wall" alongside other botanical or ornithological prints. Its 19th-century gravitas grounds a room and adds a layer of intellectual history.

  • Naturalist’s Study: Place it above a vintage desk or a bookshelf filled with leather-bound books. The rich history of the print pairs perfectly with aged wood and brass desk accessories.

  • Conversation Piece: Because it is unglazed, the texture of the antique paper and the hand-painted colors are more visible. Position it in a well-lit area (avoiding direct sunlight) to allow the fine details of the feathers to be appreciated.

Shipping & Sustainability
