RARE Susie Cooper Art Deco Signed Studio Pottery Bowl
The Story
This highly collectible bowl is a rare example of Susie Cooper’s "incised ware," produced during her early years in Burslem. Unlike her more common brightly painted floral designs, this piece showcases her minimalist, studio-influenced style. Introduced in 1932, this range featured simple rhythmic patterns or animals carved directly into the clay. Finished in a calming, soft oatmeal satin-matte glaze, it is a timeless piece of British ceramic history.
The Details
Dimensions: ~16cm Diameter x 10cm H.
Designer: Susie Cooper OBE.
Era: Circa 1932–1936.
Marks: Hand-incised Susie Cooper signature and "Ref 504" to the base.
Condition: Excellent condition. It shows minor wear consistent with age, including a few small spots of discoloration/rust to the interior. It is completely free of chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs.
Why It’s Special
Susie Cooper was one of the most prolific and influential ceramic designers of the 20th century. Her "signature" mark (as seen on this bowl) was specifically used for her more artistic 'studio' wares, making them much harder to find than her standard commercial lines. The organic rounded shape atop a flared pedestal base gives the bowl a sophisticated, architectural silhouette.
Styling Tips
Quiet Luxury: The neutral oatmeal tone and matte finish make this bowl a perfect addition to a "minimalist farmhouse" or "modern rustic" interior. Style it as a standalone piece on a dark wood sideboard to let the soft cream tones stand out.
Texture Focus: Place the bowl where side-lighting (like from a window or lamp) can catch the delicate incised patterns on the exterior. This highlights the handcrafted, rhythmic quality of the design.
Art Deco Grouping: Pair it with other early 20th-century pottery in muted tones. Its understated elegance provides a beautiful counterpoint to more brightly colored or highly patterned Art Deco ceramics.
