Vintage Korean Celadon Green Glazed Teacup and Cover
The Story
Sourced by us directly from Seoul, South Korea, this beautiful teacup and cover is a fine example of Korean studio pottery. It features a divine celadon green crackle glaze, a style of pottery that has been celebrated since the Goryeo Dynasty for its "opulent" appearance, often described as the color of the sky after rain. The traditional two-piece design is perfect for brewing loose-leaf tea, as the cover allows for proper infusion.
The Details
Dimensions: Cup: 7.5cm H x 6.5cm diameter (10.5cm wide including handle) Cover: ~2.5cm H x 9cm diameter.
Origin: Seoul, South Korea.
Era: Circa 1970s (Studio pottery dating).
Material: Heavy stoneware with a celadon green crackle glaze.
Features: Signed by the maker on the base (maker unknown).
Condition: Very good vintage condition. The crackle glaze shows some slight discoloration from authentic use, and there is a very discreet "flea nibble" on the cover.
Why It’s Special
Celadon pottery is one of Korea's most significant cultural exports, prized for its jade-like translucency and the intricate "crazing" or crackle effect of the glaze. This piece is a "soulful" alternative to mass-produced teaware, offering a tactile and meditative way to enjoy tea. The signature on the base confirms its status as a piece of unique studio art rather than a factory-made item.
Styling Tips
The Tea Ritual: Use it as part of a dedicated tea tray display with a small bamboo mat and a single flower in a bud vase. The cover is not just functional; it also acts as a resting place for spent tea leaves or an infuser.
Minimalist Shelf Decor: The clean, sculptural lines and soft green hue make it an ideal accent for a minimalist or Japandi-style interior. It pairs beautifully with light woods and neutral linen textures.
Curated Ceramics: Group it with other oriental ceramics or pieces of green studio pottery to create a tonal collection that highlights the variations in green glazes.
