Vintage Native American Santo Domingo (Kewa) Hand-Coiled Squat Bowl

£325.00

The Story

A highly collectible mid-century pottery bowl from the Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo in New Mexico. Acquired from the estate of a dedicated English collector, this unsigned piece dates to approximately 1940–1950 and was likely created for the early tourist market of that era. The bowl showcases the classic aesthetic of the Kewa people: buff-colored clay with a cream slip and striking black geometric motifs that emphasize negative space.

The Details

  • Dimensions: ~9.5cm Diameter (at widest) x 6cm H

  • Technique: Hand-coiled clay construction, hand-painted with traditional pigments.

  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Free of damage, with light surface wear consistent with its age and the occasional tiny flea nibble.

  • Heritage Note: The base features the origin location penciled on by the original collector. Reminder: Historic Pueblo pottery is for decorative use only and should not come into contact with water.

Heritage Significance

The Santo Domingo Pueblo, located south of Santa Fe, is known for maintaining some of the most conservative and traditional pottery designs among the Pueblos. Unlike other regions that may use figurative or animal designs, Kewa pottery is celebrated for its bold, disciplined geometric patterns that have remained largely unchanged for generations.
