Vintage Wedgwood Smoke Grey Crystal Glass Bud Vase / Candle Holder

£25.00

The Story

Designed by the celebrated English glass artist Frank Thrower, this piece is a classic of 1980s modernist design. Thrower, the founder of Dartington Glass, was heavily influenced by the clean, functional lines of Scandinavian glassware. After Wedgwood Glass acquired Dartington in 1982, they continued to produce many of his iconic moulded glass designs. This versatile vessel-finished in a sophisticated, smoky pewter-grey—serves as a bud vase, a bulb vase, or a candle holder.

The Details

  • Designer: Frank Thrower.

  • Maker: Wedgwood Limited, England.

  • Era: Circa 1980.

  • Material: Heavyweight, thick-walled crystal glass with a polished underside.

  • Dimensions: 11cm High / 7cm Wide (at rim).

  • Condition: Very good vintage condition. It retains its original manufacturing sticker on the lip. There are a few small surface scratches to the "belly" of the glass, but these are minor and do not affect its display value.

Why It’s Special

Frank Thrower’s work is highly collectible for its "honest" and accessible modernism. The "smoke grey" tint is particularly sought after because it complements almost any interior palette, from industrial lofts to minimalist Scandi-style homes. The weight of the piece gives it a premium feel, and its dual-purpose design makes it a practical addition to a curated home.

Styling Tips

  • The Minimalist Bud Vase: Place a single, architectural stem—like an Eucalyptus branch or a single white anemone—inside. The smoky glass will beautifully frame the stem.

  • Moody Candlelight: Use it as a holder for a standard dinner candle. The thick crystal will catch and refract the flame, creating a soft, ambient glow that highlights the grey tones of the glass.

  • Mid-Century Grouping: Pair it with other smoky or textured glass pieces on a teak sideboard. It looks especially effective when grouped in threes of varying heights.

Sustainable Shipping

  • 100% plastic-free, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging.

  • U.K. Delivery: Sent via FREE Royal Mail Tracked 48 service.
